Hypothyroidism
|
| If your thyroid does not produce enough thyroid hormone, it is likely that you have hypothyroidism.
Hypothyroidism is one of the main causes of slow metabolism in the body because thyroid hormone is
responsible for activating your metabolism. |
When you have your doctor test your thyroid, they will most likely run a Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
Test or TSH Test. Typically when your thyroid hormone levels go down, TSH will increase and vice versa.
When your doctor does a thyroid test this is what they normally look for. If you have hypothyroidism
your TSH level will be elevated.
Elevated TSH is not the only cause of hypothyroidism. If your thyroid is tested and returns this result,
press your health care provider to run a full thyroid panel to ensure that you aren’t missing other factors
that could be contributing to an elevated TSH.
For example, patients that have Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism actually have an immune system disorder
that is creating their thyroid condition. With Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism the immune system starts to
attack the thyroid which diminishes the level of thyroid hormone being produced over time, thus
creating hypothyroidism. A standard TSH test will only highlight the low hormone production, but not
the overall reason for why it is low.
Given this example, you might be wondering why so few doctors run a full thyroid panel when they
discover a condition like hypothyroid. The simple fact is, regardless of the root cause of your
hypothyroidism you will be placed on some type of thyroid hormone replacement medication. Many
doctors feel that if medication is the ultimate outcome, they can save money, time and effort by
foregoing additional testing. However, this may leave you as the patient with a new pill and additional
symptoms that go unabated. |
